Evolving Roles, Strengthening Culture: Why My Job Title Is Changing at Space Building Consultancy
Toby Bowser, Founder and Director Space Building Consultancy Ltd reflects on changes to the business and why it feels right to change titles.
Over the past year, Space Building Consultancy has continued to grow, evolve, and sharpen its identity. With that evolution comes a natural moment of reflection—both organisationally and personally. One small but meaningful part of that journey has been a change in my own job title: from Managing Director to simply Director.
Although on the surface this may seem like a subtle shift, for me—and for us as a business—it represents something much bigger.
Reflecting a Truly Collaborative Leadership Team
Our recent restructuring has brought greater clarity and balance across our leadership group. Each director plays an equally vital role in shaping the direction of the company, guiding our team, and delivering for our clients. Moving away from titles that imply hierarchy and towards a shared directorship reinforces what has always been one of our core values: collaboration over command.
This change reflects my belief that leadership is best when it’s collective, not concentrated. Within Space Building Consultancy, expertise is spread across an exceptional team of directors who all contribute uniquely to the business. Adopting equal titles isn’t just symbolic—it recognises the reality of how we work: together, openly, and with shared responsibility.
The Power of a Flat Management Structure
Many growing companies instinctively add layers of hierarchy as they expand. We’ve chosen a different path. A flatter, more open structure aligns better with who we are and how we want to serve clients.
Here’s why:
1. Faster Decision-Making
With fewer layers, ideas move quickly. There’s no long chain of approvals—just direct conversations and action. This helps us stay responsive and agile, especially in a fast-paced built environment sector.
2. Better Collaboration Across the Business
Without rigid hierarchies, collaboration flows naturally. Teams share knowledge more freely, work more effectively on cross-disciplinary projects, and maintain that friendly, supportive culture our clients often comment on.
3. Clearer Alignment With Our Values
Transparency, mutual respect, and shared accountability have always defined our approach. Adopting an equal-director structure simply puts our organisational chart in line with our culture.
A Title Change That Represents Who We Are Becoming
For me personally, stepping into the Director title feels right. It reflects the collaborative ethos at the heart of Space Building Consultancy and acknowledges the collective strength of our leadership team. I’m proud of the direction we’re heading, the team we’ve built, and the values that continue to guide us.
